Fishflies Graphic Novel Review

Fishflies by Jeff Lemire is a thoughtfully crafted small-town mystery that allows readers to really immerse themselves in the world of supernatural intrigue, loneliness, and regret. The story draws you into Belle River's quiet and rural streets. Lemire's skillful storytelling balances moments of eerie suspense with tender explorations of grief and isolation, and supernatural elements pull you deeper into the lives of its haunted and traumatized characters as they entwine with the emotions of loss and longing.

Written and illustrated by Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Absolute Flash, The Underwater Welder), Fishflies collects the seven-issue series spanning across 408 pages released between October 2023 and July 2024 through Lemire's Substack. The trade paperback edition became available in October 2025.

Franny Fox

The story focuses on Franny Fox and Bug, formerly known as Lee Simard. At the start, Lee commits a horrible and heinous crime, murdering a child at point-blank range during a convenience store robbery, cursed by his actions, Lee undergoes a haunting transformation into Bug, a giant humanoid fishfly. As the story unfolds, Franny Fox and Bug form a deep and beautiful bond that is both poignant and unexpected Lemire's masterful exploration of Lee's deep regret and inner turmoil evokes surprising sympathy for a deeply flawed and troubled character.

Fishflies skillfully weaves a roster of dynamic relationships and storylines. Daniel Laraque, one of the town's dedicated police officers, is determined to solve the murder and bring Lee to justice. Meanwhile, Helen Tremblay grieves the loss of her child, adding layers of raw emotion to the narrative that fill out this world. As you follow each of these characters, the mystery deepens and is delivered so well.

Lemire's unique art style elevates the story, giving each page with atmosphere, emotion, and tension through his beautiful use of color. His storytelling and brilliant artwork perfectly complement the narrative's haunting, warm, and mysterious tone, making Fishflies a visual and emotional feast.

Fishflies is a story to remember, from the absolutely gorgeous pages to the meticulously drawn, colored artwork to the deep and engaging story that lingers long after you finish reading.
